What is an air diffuser?

An air diffuser is an HVAC terminal device that distributes conditioned air (cooled or heated) into a room in a controlled, uniform pattern. It mounts into the ceiling, wall, or floor and connects to the duct system. Diffusers regulate airflow direction, velocity, and throw distance to ensure thermal comfort without creating drafts.

Key distinction: Adiffuser supplies air into a space. Avent or grille returns or exhausts air from a space. Both are essential components of a balanced HVAC system.

Types of air diffusers

By pattern

  • 1-way diffuser — directs airflow in a single direction; used along perimeter walls
  • 2-way diffuser — splits airflow into two opposite directions; ideal for corridor ceilings
  • 3-way diffuser — three-direction throw; suited for corner ceiling positions
  • 4-way diffuser — 360° radial spread; the most common type for open-plan rooms

By material

  • ABS plastic diffusers — lightweight, corrosion-resistant, cost-effective; suitable for commercial and residential use. Astberg Ventilation's ABS diffuser range offers sizes from 150mm to 600mm with multi-directional throw and adjustable pattern controllers.
  • Aluminium diffusers — high durability, premium finish; often used in exposed architectural ceilings
  • Steel diffusers — heavy-duty; preferred in industrial or high-humidity environments

By mounting style

  • Ceiling diffusers — most common; flush-mounted into T-bar or plasterboard ceilings
  • Linear slot diffusers — narrow rectangular outlets; used in continuous perimeter runs
  • Floor diffusers — underfloor air distribution (UFAD) systems
  • Swirl diffusers — create rotating airflow; effective for high-ceiling spaces

How to choose the right diffuser

  • Room size & ceiling height — larger rooms with high ceilings need diffusers with longer throw and higher airflow capacity
  • Duct size — match the neck size to your existing ductwork to avoid turbulence and noise
  • Aesthetics — ABS plastic diffusers blend easily into standard white ceilings; aluminium suits exposed architectural finishes
  • Environment — for humid or corrosive environments (kitchens, cleanrooms), choose ABS or powder-coated aluminium over bare steel
  • Noise sensitivity — for offices, bedrooms, or recording spaces, select diffusers rated NC 25 or below
  • Budget — ABS diffusers offer the best value for standard comme.rcial and residential installations

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a diffuser and a grille?

A diffuser spreads supply air in multiple directions to mix it with room air before it reaches occupants, reducing drafts. A grille is typically a fixed louvre used on return air or exhaust openings — it directs rather than disperses airflow.

What size air diffuser do I need?

Sizing depends on airflow rate (l/s) and throw distance. For a standard 20 m² office room with a 2.7m ceiling, a 200mm neck diffuser rated at ~80–100 l/s is typically adequate. Always verify against the diffuser's published performance data for your specific pressure drop.

Are ABS plastic diffusers as good as aluminium?

For most commercial and residential applications, yes. ABS diffusers are lighter, corrosion-resistant, and less expensive. Aluminium is preferred when a metallic finish is specified architecturally, or in environments with extreme temperature swings where plastic may warp over time.

Can I replace an existing diffuser without changing the ductwork?

In most cases, yes — provided the replacement has the same neck diameter and face size. Always confirm the airflow capacity of the new diffuser matches or exceeds the original specification to avoid pressure imbalance.

Why is my air diffuser making noise?

Diffuser noise is usually caused by excessive air velocity through the neck (undersize diffuser), a misaligned duct connection causing turbulence, or a damper not fully opened. Check that the operating airflow is within the manufacturer's stated NC rating range.

What is a 4-way ceiling diffuser?

A 4-way ceiling diffuser discharges air in four equal radial directions simultaneously, creating a 360° spread pattern. It is the standard choice for open-plan offices, retail spaces, and classrooms where uniform air distribution across the full room is required.
