Air Purifier or ERV System: What is the Difference, and Which One Do You Need?

by Astberg Ventilation on Oct 31, 2025

IAQ is significant to our comfort, health, and energy.

The difference lies in the fact that many people assume air purifiers and ERV (Energy Recovery Ventilation) systems perform the same functions; however, their purposes are extremely different.

Let us learn more about each system and find out which one suits your place of work or residence.

What Is an Air Purifier?

An Air Purifier is a device that cleans and filters the indoor air.

It functions by moving the air within the enclosure over a system of air filters that collect dust, smoke, pet dander, pollen, and various harmful pollutants such as PM 2.5.

Common Filter Types:

Pre Filter- Catches big particles such as dust and hair.

HEPA Filter—filters down to 0.3 microns of fine particles.

Activated Carbon Filter - Takes away odors, VOCs, and smoke.

UV / IFD / Ionizer - Protects bacteria and germs in the air.

Benefits of an Air Purifier:

Enhances the indoor air quality immediately.

Eliminates pollution and allergens.

Very popular with asthma and children, and users.

Easy to install and portable.

What Is an ERV System?

ERV (Energy Recovery Ventilation) system is not a filter alone; it is a ventilation and economical system.

It introduces fresh air outdoors in the building and gets rid of stifling air moving indoors

Concurrently, it carries heat and humidity between the two streams of air to conserve energy.

How ERV Works:

Stagnant air leaves the building via the ERV core.

New outdoor air comes in and flows near the outbound air.

Heat is exchanged in and out of the core of the heat exchanger in terms of temperature and moisture; some of the incoming air is thereby either pre-cooled or pre-heated.

Output: a clean, cooled, and comfortable atmosphere without energy wastage.

Benefits of the ERV System:

Ensures the constant flow of fresh air.

Cuts down on CO₂ and eliminates suffocation.

Conserves 20-30% of energy through the reclamation of either heat or coolness.

Holds the humidity back (particularly in humid or cold climates).

Smooths out mold, odor, and indoor pollution.

Air Purifier vs. ERV: Comparison Table.

Which One Should You Choose?

Are you living in a polluted city (such as Delhi or Mumbai)?

Best results with Air Purifier + ERV combo.

In case your room is airtight with air-conditioning.

ERV is necessary to introduce air that is oxygenated.

In case you simply need some cleaning (dust, smoke)

The Air Purifier is enough

To live healthily and save on energy.

The long-term solution is the ERV System.

Astberg ERV is a smarter choice because of the following reasons.

Astberg ERV Systems have been developed according to the Indian climate, including the hot summer to the humid monsoon.

They apply a high-efficiency (aluminum/fiber paper type) heat exchanger and EC motors that warrant low noise and energy consumption.

Air and energy recovery.

Can be purchased for tiny rooms to commercial areas.

Easy maintenance

Silent operation

It is not only in Astberg that you clean the air, but you breathe pure, natural, and healthy air every day.

In Summary

Air Cleaner = Filters air indoors.

ERV System: Introduces fresh air into the building.

To achieve full indoor air control, the two systems can be used simultaneously - the Air purifier is used to eliminate fine dust, whereas the ERV introduces oxygenated, balanced fresh air with minimum loss of energy.
