Key Components of an AHU

An air handling unit consists of several specialized parts working together in perfect harmony. Each component plays a specific role in cleaning, conditioning, and moving the air.

Fans and Blowers

Fans are responsible for moving air throughout the entire building. A large supply fan pushes conditioned air into the ductwork. Meanwhile, a return fan pulls used air back from the rooms. Centrifugal fans are common, but many modern units now use energy-efficient EC fans to keep air passing smoothly through the system.

Heating and Cooling Coils

To adjust the air temperature, the unit relies on a network of coils. The cooling coil often circulates chilled water or refrigerant to remove heat from the air. Conversely, heating coils use hot water, steam, or electric resistance to warm things up. These coils act as highly efficient heat exchangers, transferring thermal energy directly to the passing air stream.

Air Filters

Before air reaches the coils or the occupied spaces, it must be cleaned. Every AHU features an air filter bank to capture dust, pollen, and other airborne particles. Units typically use a combination of coarse pre-filters to catch large debris and fine bag or HEPA filters to trap microscopic contaminants.

Humidifiers and Dehumidifiers

Maintaining the right moisture level is crucial for human comfort and building health. Humidifiers add moisture to dry winter air, often using steam or water mist. In the summer, the cooling coil naturally dehumidifies the air by causing excess moisture to condense and drain away.

Mixing Chambers

The mixing chamber is where return air from the building blends with outside air. Dampers open and close to regulate this ratio. By mixing return air with fresh air, the system reduces the amount of energy needed to heat or cool the incoming outdoor air.

How Air Handling Units Work

The operating principle of an AHU is straightforward but highly orchestrated. The cycle begins when the unit pulls in fresh outside air and return air from the building.

First, the dampers in the mixing chamber adjust to get the right proportion of outdoor and return air. The central control system dictates this ratio based on temperature sensors and carbon dioxide levels. Next, the mixed air flows through the filter banks, which strip away dust, allergens, and other impurities.

Once the air is clean, it travels across the heating or cooling coils. If the building requires air conditioning, the cold coils lower the temperature and remove excess humidity. If the building is cold, the heating coils warm the air. Finally, the supply fan forcefully pushes this newly conditioned air into the ductwork. The duct network then distributes this precise air volume evenly to specific zones or rooms across the building.

Building designs vary wildly, and so do the systems required to cool and heat them. Engineers choose from several distinct types of units based on the specific needs of the facility.

Constant Air Volume (CAV)

A Constant Air Volume system provides a steady, unchanging flow of air. It regulates the building's climate by changing the supply air temperature rather than the fan speed. These systems work exceptionally well for large, open spaces like gymnasiums or warehouses where the thermal load remains consistent.

Variable Air Volume (VAV)

A Variable Air Volume system adjusts the actual amount of air delivered to different zones. By using variable speed drives and terminal boxes, it can supply less air to an empty conference room and more air to a crowded office. This targeted approach saves a tremendous amount of energy.

Packaged Units

Packaged units are self-contained systems where all the components, including the compressor and condenser, sit in a single metal casing. You will frequently see these sitting on the roofs of retail stores and small commercial buildings. They are cost-effective and relatively easy to install.

Modular Units

Modular systems are custom-built for large or complex facilities. Manufacturers construct them in separate sections—such as a fan module, a filter module, and a coil module. This allows engineers to design a highly specific system that fits perfectly into tight mechanical rooms or specialized industrial environments.

The Importance of AHUs for Indoor Air Quality

We spend the vast majority of our time inside, making indoor air quality a top priority. A well-maintained AHU is the primary defense against stale, polluted air.

By constantly bringing in outside air, the system prevents carbon dioxide and indoor pollutants from building up. The filtration system actively removes harmful particulates, which is vital for protecting the respiratory health of the building's occupants. Furthermore, strict humidity control prevents the growth of mold and mildew, eliminating musty odors and protecting the structural integrity of the building.

One of the most effective upgrades is the integration of Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERV) or Heat Recovery Ventilators (HRV). These devices capture the thermal energy from the exhaust air before it leaves the building. In the winter, the warm exhaust air pre-heats the freezing incoming air. In the summer, the cool exhaust air pre-cools the hot outdoor air. This brilliant exchange significantly reduces the strain on the heating and cooling coils, leading to massive energy savings.
